Elijah knew it was too early to be awake, but he couldn’t help it, his mind was filled with thoughts – memories – of the four years he and his lover, Carter, had spent together. In the beginning, as with all relationships, they had been hot and heavy, forty-five year old Carter could barely keep his hands off Elijah, but now? It seemed as though they had fallen into a routine. A routine consisting of morning kisses when they would part ways to go to their jobs, Carter as the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company and Elijah to his small sandwich shop, Crusts Off. Their nights were spent barely speaking as they had dinner then sex. Elijah couldn’t call it making love anymore since it had lost the tenderness, the closeness, he had once felt. He knew it was now more about getting off than an expression of the feelings they had for one another.
There was a time when they slept, they would be curled around each other, always with some part of their bodies touching be it hands, legs, noses, anything, but all of that disappeared and each man slept on his side with his back facing the other. Elijah had no doubts that they both still loved each other, but it just wasn’t the same as he thought it would be when they got years into it.
After three months of the same, Elijah thought maybe a change of scenery was needed. He planned a vacation for them to a tropical island where they would have a small house all to themselves. When he had looked up the information on the internet, he fell in love with the pictures of the private white sand beach and the crystal blue of the ocean. He felt in his heart it would be the perfect place for them to reconnect, to rekindle the spark they seemed to be missing.
Three Days Earlier
Elijah was glad he’d booked he and Carter into first class for their trip. He stretched out and sipped his glass of champagne, relaxing and preparing himself for the next week of tropical bliss. He frowned when he glanced over at Carter beside him working on his iPad. “This is supposed to be a vacation, Carter. Why are you working?”
Carter didn’t take his attention from the small screen. “It’s just a few little things I didn’t get the chance to take care of before we left, darling. I don’t intend to be working through our whole vacation. I know how important this is to you.”
Elijah sighed and chugged the rest of his champagne. He hated it when Carter seemed to talk down to him. He realized he was a full twenty years younger than his lover, but he had always thought they were equals. He grabbed the headphones he’d been given and plugged them in. Slipping them into his ears, he watched the in-flight movie and ignored Carter for the rest of the flight.
The ride to their rental home was just as quiet. They’d retrieved their luggage from the carousel and headed outside where Carter got them a cab. Elijah sat looking out of the window, slowly growing concerned that maybe a vacation wasn’t going to be enough for them to try to reconnect. He started wondering if it was just time to let go and move on.
As their home away from home came into view, Elijah expected excitement to fill him, but he swallowed back a strong feeling of regret. Everything had already started on a bad note, for him, he was worried the rest of it would be just as bad. Just have faith, he told himself repeatedly.
Once the car stopped, he hurriedly got out and went up to the front door, pulling the key from his pocket. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, marveling at the interior. The pictures definitely didn’t do the place justice. Gauzy curtains covered the floor to ceiling windows which looked out over the ocean. Walking to one, he held back the material and smiled at the view. This is going to be my home for the next few days.
He jumped when Carter slid his arms around his waist, holding him close.
“You did good, darling,” Carter whispered in his ear.
“I hope so,” Elijah murmured.
For three days, Elijah and Carter barely spoke. Neither made any move to try and have sex. Even though he said he wouldn’t, Carter worked and Elijah ended up going sightseeing alone. He bought numerous little souvenirs for friends and family and spent his days soaking up everything about their little island hideaway. He spent his nights reading some of the books in the home’s library.
Elijah inhaled deeply of the breeze blowing in through the open bedroom windows. He always loved the sound of the ocean waves lapping at the shore, it relaxed him like no other sound on the planet. He could smell the distinct scent of a storm coming. The muffled sound of thunder in the distance confirmed it. No matter what he had planned for the day, he was going to be stuck indoors with Carter, who appeared to have the attitude that he could take Elijah or leave him.
He felt tears pricking at his eyes when the bed moved beneath him and he heard Carter’s bare feet padding across the hardwood floor and the bathroom door closing. He tried to steel himself up for the conversation he knew he was going to have with Carter about the state of their relationship. It was something he didn’t really want to do, but for his peace of mind, he had to know where they stood, where they were going – if they were still in the relationship for the long haul. If things were going to come to an end, they thought might as well part while they still cared for each other instead of waiting until everything dissolved into a poison that would ruin any chance of having a friendship when all was said and done.
A steady rain began to fall by the time Carter emerged from the bathroom. The smell of his bath gel and aftershave wafted out after him, filling the bedroom with the seducing aroma. Elijah sat up, watching as Carter took the thick white towel from around his waist and dried his hair as he walked to the bed.
Standing, Elijah made his way toward the bathroom, intent on taking a hot shower, but as he started to pass in front of his lover, Carter reached out and grabbed hold Elijah’s wrist, stopping him from going any further. Elijah turned as Carter sat and pulled him closer, resting his head on Elijah’s firm stomach. Not wanting to show how vulnerable he felt at that moment, Elijah looked at the ground, not sure what he should do. Since they had arrived, Carter had made no attempt to touch him, now all of the sudden, he was reaching out to him.
Hearing Carter sniffle softly, Elijah no longer cared if Carter saw him as weak, he began to cry. He was hurting and the only way he could express it was to let his tears fall. He wept for all the times when he needed comfort and reassurance that things would be better, that he still had a partner against the world. He sobbed because all of the emotions he held back broke through the dam and came flooding out from just one touch. Something that might seem insignificant to a lot of people, meant the world to Elijah. Cater was showing him that on some level, he still cared.
Raising his hands, Elijah carded his fingers through Carter’s blond hair. He wanted to say something, but when he opened his mouth, words just would not come no matter how much he wanted them to. He glanced at Carter as he raised his head.
“I’m so sorry,” Carter whispered.
“Why are you apologizing?” Elijah’s heart nearly stopped, he was overcome with concern that the apology was not a good thing.
“I have been neglecting you for the last few months. I’ve taken for granted that you’ll always been here with me. I’m scared of losing you, Eli. I don’t want that to happen. I…love you.”
Elijah’s heart swelled at the confession. “You’re not gonna lose me, Carter. You won’t, I promise.”
As Carter began to lay back, Elijah went with him, making himself comfortable overtop Carter’s muscular body. He gazed down into the face he wanted to wake up to for the rest of his life. He felt a longing to hold Carter when he saw the usually bright blue of his eyes was now misty due to unshed tears. Elijah relished the warmth of Carter’s hands as they cupped his face. He closed his eyes as Carter rubbed his thumbs over his cheeks.
When Carter quickly reversed their positions so he was laying on Elijah, Elijah gasped loudly. They looked at each other and in that moment, Elijah saw everything he needed to see, everything thing he was questioning was answered in his lover’s eyes. He was able to see Carter was hurting as much as he was, Carter’s emotions were clear on his face and in his gaze.
Elijah raised up and pressed his lips to Carter’s with a groan. The kiss began somewhat chaste and innocent, but rapidly progressed into one which was filled with all the passion that had not been spoken nor acted on for a few months.
Getting completely lost in what he was feeling, Elijah barely noticed when Carter sat up and stripped Elijah’s boxers off, tossing them to the floor. All of Elijah’s insecurities, his doubts, and worries left him as Carter gently started preparing him, stretching his entrance for the lovemaking both clearly wanted and needed. Elijah opened his legs further and raised his knees toward his chest. He moaned loudly as Carter’s slender fingers penetrated him deeper. Craving more contact, Elijah curled his hips up from the bed when Carter stroked his spot with intent. Elijah was unable to contain himself as he grabbed the bars of the headboard and yelped. He was so thankful their house was miles away from where anyone could hear them if they got too loud. Elijah whimpered when Carter removed his fingers.
Elijah grew increasingly turned on as he watched Carter slicking up his hard cock with the lube Elijah’d had the foresight to bring. He reached down and began stroking his own length, nibbling his bottom lip and stifling his noises slightly. His face heated up when Carter chuckled. Elijah felt just as he had the first time he and Carter made love and he was ecstatic to be experiencing them now as though they were fresh and new.
As Carter slid slowly into him, Elijah curled his fingers around the black flames tattooed on Carter’s arms. He dug them into the flesh at the increasing discomfort of his body adjusting to Carter filling him, making him whole once more. Elijah loved the closeness as Carter kissed his cheeks and chin, eventually working his way down to his lover’s collarbone. Elijah arched his back and gasped when Carter started nibbling and sucking in one spot. Elijah knew exactly what he was doing, marking Elijah as his. And he was. Elijah was Carter’s soul mate. He knew it and Carter knew it. They would always be together, no matter how many do overs they needed to get their relationship back on track.
Carter thrust his hips forward and Elijah kicked his head back, giving better access to his neck, which Carter took full advantage of, licking and kissing it repeatedly. The sensation of his lover’s hot breath on his skin fueled the fire burning within Elijah. He started lifting his hips up to meet Carter’s every push into him. He couldn’t seem to get enough of his lover, wishing to take him fully inside his own body.
The lovemaking was different than it had been. With this act of truly connecting, Elijah and Carter showed how much they still desired one another. They weren’t have sex just to get off, they were doing to show each other how they truly felt. Everything was understood even if it wasn’t said.
Elijah snaked his hand between their bodies and wrapped his fingers around his erection, stroking it in time with Carter’s thrusts. He ran his thumb over the tip on one pass, spreading the slick fluid there back down the shaft, easing the friction ever so slightly. Reaching down with his free hand, Elijah gently rolled his balls with his fingertips as he felt his climax growing in his belly. As much as he wanted to wait until Carter came, he didn’t feel as though he would be able to hold back much longer. He placed his feet on Carter’s back to get more leverage while moving his lower body.
As a huge clap of thunder struck, Elijah wailed Carter’s name as he came. Every nerve in his body felt like it was exposed as his hips snapped up to meet Carter’s. He curled his toes and dug his heels into Carter’s back for long moments, gasping and panting in the wake of one of the best orgasms he had had in a long time. His muscles were a hell of a lot looser, but his body was now overly sensitive and he whined at the continued stimulation.
Elijah grunted when Carter sat back on his knees and grabbed his hips, raising them slightly. He was torn between pulling away and pushing back into each thrust. He grabbed Carter’s wrists when the other man closed his eyes tightly and he tensed up. Elijah was familiar with the way Carter looked when he came. It was one of his favorite faces his lover made. Though he thought Carter was an absolutely perfect specimen of the human form, he could never stop himself from chuckling lightly when he came. Elijah likened the expression to that of someone trying hard not to smell something stinky. Carter never found the humor in it, but after the first few times they had sex, he told Elijah he didn’t mind too much that he got a kick out of it.
As Carter lay beside him, Elijah touched his cheek. “I love you. With all my heart, Carter.”
Carter smiled. “I love you too, darling. What would you like to do today?”
“Hmm,” Elijah began as he turned onto his back. “I think I would like to start with a nice hot bath. We can figure out what we want to do the rest of the day later. Obviously we won’t be going out anytime soon.”
Carter nodded. “Obviously.”
Elijah climbed onto his lover and grinned at him. “We could always stay in bed.”
“Mmm, yes we could.” Carter kissed him. “But don’t you think we should do something more productive?”
“We’re rebuilding our relationship, what could be more productive than that?”
Carter exhaled. “I think it’s going to take a lot more than continual lovemaking to rebuild it, but I’m not opposed to having a few sessions.” He kissed Elijah. “However, I will go get your bath running.”
Elijah lay on the bed and watched as Carter went into the bathroom. He turned his head toward one of the windows, letting his mind clear as he observed the curtains blowing in the breeze. It was almost hypnotic the way they rose and fell. He closed his eyes and dozed off, not realizing he had done so until Carter was calling his name.
“Eli, your bath is ready.”
Elijah opened his eyes and blinked.
“Falling asleep on me already? The day has just started.”
“Yeah, well, I had a very active morning so far,” Elijah replied cheekily. He got up and winked as he passed Carter. Easing himself into the tub, he exhaled deeply as he let the hot water soothe his muscles and relax him even farther than the sex had already done. He reached out for Carter when he walked into the room. “Join me?”
Elijah scooted forward, anxious to have Carter’s body once again pressed against his. He leaned back when his lover was settled behind him. “This is nice.”
“I agree.” Carter raised both of their left hands and laced their fingers together. “I really am sorry. You know that right?”
Elijah nodded. “I know, but there’s nothing to be sorry for. We both could have done more.”
“I know, but I feel like it’s all my fault. I get so caught up in work and like I said, I take you for granted. I need to remember that you might not always be there if your needs aren’t being met. I am so damned lucky to have you and I would hate to watch you walk out the door and into someone else’s arms.”
“You don’t have to worry about that. It’ll never happen. I don’t think anyone else would want me.”
Carter scoffed. “And why, pray tell, do you feel that way?”
Elijah shrugged. “Because I am a bit high maintenance, in case you haven’t noticed.”
“I would have to disagree with that. High maintenance would mean that you have to have everything you want when you want it and you have never been that way for as long as we’ve been together.”
“You’re just blind to it is all.” Elijah snickered when Carter splashed a little water at him.
Carter grabbed the bath sponge from the small shelf on the wall and plunged it into the water. He squeezed it out over Elijah’s chest, running it over his skin.
Elijah sighed as warmth ran over his chest and down his stomach and sides. “We need to do this more often,” he murmured.
Carter placed a kiss just behind Elijah’s ear then nibbled on the lobe. “I have to agree. I love bathing with you. It always leads to other…things.” He ran the sponge beneath the water, teasing Elijah’s cock with it.
“Carter, please. I don’t think I can get it up again so soon.”
“You don’t even want to try? Hmm?” He continued to rub the sponge over Elijah’s most sensitive body part.
“I-I…that feels so good,” Elijah moaned out.
“I’m sure this…will feel so much better.” Carter let go of the sponge and took hold of Elijah’s half-hard dick. He made long strokes up and down, giving it a gentle squeeze every so often.
Elijah reached up and grabbed at Carter’s hair, pulling his head down so they could kiss. He moaned as he slipped his tongue into Carter’s mouth, tugging at his lover’s hair even more. He wanted nothing more than a second orgasm. The first was amazing, so he assumed the second would blow the top of his skull off.
Pulling his mouth from Carter’s, he yelled out praises to the other man as he came. “Oh God, oh God, oh God,” he panted out, trying to catch his breath.
“Well, I never thought of myself as God, but uh, thank you,” Carter said with sarcasm lacing his voice.
“Bastard,” Elijah breathed out.
“Always,” Carter purred. “You look as though you’re ready to go back to bed for a little while.”
Elijah nodded and yawned.
“Then let’s finish up here and get you back in bed.”
“You will let me take a nap, right?”
“Maybe.” Carter found the sponge and carefully cleaned Elijah, taking care to be as gentle as he could when it came time to wash Elijah’s soft member. He chuckled quietly when Elijah whimpered when it made contact between his legs. “Shh.”
Elijah’s whole body felt like a mass of jelly. Every muscle was relaxed to the point he wasn’t sure he’d be able to lift himself from the tub. Sliding forward, he slowly stood and stepped out. His skin prickled with the slight chill in the room and he rubbed his hands over his arms as Carter got out as well.
“Let me warm you up.” Carter grabbed a towel from the rack and wrapped his around his lover. He dried him completely and then himself. “Come on, the bed awaits.”
Walking to the bedroom, Elijah rested his head on Carter’s shoulder. For the first time in months, he was happy and he was determined to never let them grow apart again. He lay down and covered up, waiting for his lover to join him so he cold snuggle close against him.
Carter tossed his towel onto a chair and lay beside Elijah. He pulled the sheet and blanket over his naked body and laughed when Elijah immediately wrapped an arm around him and rested his head on his chest.
Elijah entwined his fingers with Carter’s and sighed happily. He could hear Carter’s heart beating in a strong rhythm, the sound beginning to lull him into a deep sleep. He loved it when Carter pulled him closer, kissing his head. As he drifted off, he knew they had bridged the distance they had created and they would both be hard pressed to let it happen ever again.
